Judo team competition concluded this year’s European championships for juniors, which was held for the last three days in Slovenia’s Maribor. The team event will be a part of the Tokyo Olympic Games programme for the first time in 2020. In the men’s event Azerbaijan won the title, whereas on the women’s side the national team from France won gold medals.
Interesting competition day in Maribor served the packed Lukna Hall today, where a lot of cheering went on due to the team events. Five fighters on the tatami for each side showed combats to the last atom of power. The first team to score three individual victories proceeded to the next level of competition.
In the men’s event Azerbaijan was best, beating Georgia in the final. Teams from Great Britain and Russia settled for bronze medals.
On the women’s side the French national team was victorious in the final, the Netherlands had to settle for silver. Teams from Germany and Russia won bronze medals.
The next big step for young judokas, aged between 15 and 21 years, will be the world championships, which is to be held in Croatia’s Zagreb between 18th and 22nd of October.
